Botswana victorious at start of zone 6 World Championship qualifier

Botswana team supported by home crowd defeated Mozambique in the zone 6 African qualifier for 2014 World Championship

Gaborone, Botswana October 9, 2013 - Host Botswana started on a positive note by defeating their opponent Mozambique 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-19) in the opening day of the zone 6 qualifier for the 2014 Men's World Championship in Gaborone, Botswana on Wednesday.

Botswana played a highly organised match as coach Manuel Torres put most of his stars on the court. At the end of the second set he made four changes by introducing Bokao “Btex” Nagafela, for Rebaone Pastor, Nlebesi Mpapho for setter Tjiyapo Madeluka and Alec Engliton for Shadrack Kapeko. Mozambique experienced problems with their defense that helped Botswana achieve the victory.

The opening day of the tournament also featured a much improved Zimbabwe, who came from behind to secure a 3-2 win over Lesotho with Robert Tawanda Mafuva and Mthabisi Ndlovu doing exceptionally well to earn points for Zimbabwe.

The third and last game of the opening day saw Zambia beat Namibia 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) to end the programme of the day. The first day attracted more than 200 spectators with most of them supporting the Botswana team as their performance was superb.

The top two teams in zone 6 will proceed to the third phase of African qualifier to be held January and February 2014.
