Diatec Trentino take 2013 Del Monte Super Cup
Lausanne, Switzerland, October 10, 2013 - Diatec Trentino have shown themselves to be in fine form in the lead up to the FIVB 2013 Club World Championship, after winning this year’s Del Monte Super Cup against rivals Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata.
Current Club World Championship title holders, Diatec Trentino fended off Cuicine Lube Banca Marche Marcerata to win the match in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21).
Trentino managed to turn the tables on Macerata after suffering a loss to them in last year’s gold medal match of the Del Monte Super Cup. But victory was even sweeter this time around as Trentino secured its second title in the history of the Del Monte Super Cup – their first being in 2011 when they beat Bre Banca Lannutti Cueo for the top prize - in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
The win is a feather in the cap for Roberto Serniotti who took over as the club’s coach from Radostin Stojchev this season. And with a young team to lead, he had his work cut out for him. “We started at a disadvantage in all the sets,” said Serniotti, “but I continued to tell my players to stand firm and not to let any point go. If you play against Macerata is impossible to win if you're not willing to match them."
The mood was understandably
more subdued among the Marcerata players and their coach, Alberto Guiliani, who
admitted, "Losing is never a pleasure and for 3-0 no less.” “The players have been training together only for
a few days and I knew it would not be easy, but I was certainly hoping for something
better than what we did tonight.”
Trentino players are savouring their win before they head off to Betim, Brazil to defend their title at the FIVB Club World Championships scheduled to take place from October 15 to 20. “We’ll think of the Club World Championship tomorrow morning – today we enjoy this victory!” said Trentino’s Filippo Lanza.
The team beat Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro in last year’s tournament to take their fourth title in the Championship.
