Algeria sets sight on Women's African Nations Champs
Alger, Algeria, September 10, 2013 - The Algerian women's volleyball senior national team will leave their homeland for Kenya to participate in the 2013 Women's African Nations Championship due to start at Moi International Sports Hall in Nairobi on September 14, 2013.
The Algerian delegation – led by Algerian Volleyball Federation Board member, Khaled Belkacemi and includes international referee Maamar El Kebboub – is expected to arrive to Nairobi on Wednesday.
The Algerian team had a training camp from August 26 to September 5 in Tikjda, a tourist area 120 kilometre from the capital Alger in the Bouira Province. The training camp was supervised by coach Imed Eddine Saidan.
At around 1,480 m above the sea level, Tikjda has similar climate conditions to Nairobi, which is almost 1800 m above sea level.
The new look Algerian team participated in this year's FIVB World Grand Prix where they played 12 matches in Ankara (August 2-4), Belgrade (August 9-11) and China Taipei (August 16-18) facing international teams like Turkey, Japan, Thailand, USA, Serbia, Netherlands, Italy and Dominican Republic. Unfortunately they failed to win a set, losing all their matches in straight sets.
Their coach has now incorporated eight new players from the youth and junior teams making a dramatic change in the golden team, which won the 2009 African Nations Championship and qualified for London Olympic Games in 2012.
"Our main objective from the participation in the Grand Prix was to prepare for the upcoming African Nations Championship," coach Emad said. "Although our results were very bad, it was a chance for the new players to gain experience at the highest world level. We know we will meet the continental giants like hosts Kenya and big contenders Egypt, Tunisia and Cameroon, but we will do our best," he added.
