South America set for 2014 World Champ qualifiers
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, September 12, 2013 – The South American Championship for women is scheduled to take place in Peru from September 16 to 22. In addition to the hosts, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela will be taking part in the Championship in the city of Ica to try and secure their place in the 2014 Women’s World Championship.
The CSV will be represented by two countries at the World Championship event to be held in Italy next year. The CSV’s second vacancy will be will be determined in San Juan, Argentina from October 18 to 20, where the team who placed second to fifth in the South American Championship will take part.
The South American teams have gone through a great deal of preparatory work in the lead up to September’s Championship. Brazil and Argentina, led by coach Guillermo Orduna have recently taken part in the World Grand Prix where the team led by José Roberto Guimarães won their ninth title in the competition.
Brazil, winner of the last edition of the South American Championship which took place in 2011, will go to Ica, Peru, as the Championship favourite. The Brazilian team appeared a total of 28 times in the Championship and have won 17 gold and 11 silver medals. The only year that Brazil did not participate was in 1964. Brazil’s team for the Championship will feature 14 players and will see the return of setter Fabíola and her colleague Natalia.
The Peruvian hosts, led by Korean coach, Hong Sung have just completed an international tour in Canada and South Korea. Alfredo Solis, assistant coach of the Peruvian team, has said that the pace of work for the team has increased as the date for the competition draws near. "We have increased training to twice a day, focusing mostly on the technical side, which is what interests us,” said Solis.
