Serbia confident of European Championship with three friendly wins against Poland

Belgrade, Serbia, September 2, 2013 -  Europe’s reigning men’s volleyball champions, Serbia, and 2009 European champions, Poland faced each other over the weekend in a friendly matches organised by the Volleyball Federation of Serbia in Sumice Hall of Sports in Belgrade.

The teams played three matches from Friday to Sunday to an audience of 600 spectators. In the first match the home side beat their rivals 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23) in in 105 minutes. They also won their second match 3-2 (19-25, 28-30, 25-18, 25-23, 15-13) in 118 minutes and finally the third with a score of 3-1 (28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 25-18) in 103 minutes.

Igor Kolakovic, head coach of Serbia said, “This is very good, but we have to be honest and admit that Poland is not yet on their top level. However, three victories against such a strong side give us plenty of confidence. We still have couple of friendlies before the European Championship, with Bulgaria and Egypt, and we should be able to prepare well for the start of the competition.”

Andrea Anastasi, head coach of Poland said, “We had many ups and downs in these matches. One moment we played well, the other one we missed everything. We have to be more steady in our game. These matches are very important for me to understand the situation of my team at this point.”
