Mexico and Brazil square off for Pan Am men's title

Mexico City, Mexico, August 24, 2013 – Mexico earned a ticket to the qualification round of the 2014 FIVB World League in advancing to the gold medal match of the VIII Men’s Pan American Cup with a 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 12-25, 25-21) victory over Argentina on Friday night.

On Saturday the Mexicans will play against Brazil, a team already qualified to the World League who defeated Puerto Rico 25-13, 25-19, 29-27.

It is the second time the Mexicans enter the final match of the competition with the other one in 2007 when they won the title in Dominican Republic.

Mexico’s Jesus Valdes scored 18 points while Tomas Aguilera added 13 and Daniel Vargas chipped in with 11 for the local team. Argentina’s Ivan Postemsky finished with 13, while Nicolas Mendez and Gustavo Vaca scored 12 points apiece.

“Our team is a work in progress and our goal is to be in the best shape for the U23 World Championship, congratulations to Mexico,” Argentinean captain Juan Ignacio Finoli said.

“We went through very difficult moments against a tough rival with good technique and very well disciplined. Thanks God we did it”, Mexican captain Alejandro Quiñones remarked.
 
Brazil’s Ricardo Lucarelli collected 13 points while Luan Weber had12 and Mauricio Luiz de Souza 10. On the Puerto Rican side, Ulises Maldonado and Mannix Roman scored 9 apiece.

“This match was very good for us as we worked a lot with our blocking game and also served well,” Brazilian captain Mauricio Borges said. “It was complicated for us in the end, but we know how to solve those difficult situations.”
