Mexico and Brazil to semis of Pan Am Cup
Mexico City, Mexico, August 21, 2013 – Hosts Mexico edged United States in five sets while Brazil cruised to a straight-set win over Argentina as both winning sides punched tickets to the semifinal phase of the VIII Men’s Pan American Cup on Wednesday at Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium.
In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Argentina take on Dominican Republic while United States meet Puerto Rico.
Mexico battled USA for 2 hours and 12 minutes before prevailing 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15, while Brazil blanked Argentina 25-22, 25-19, 25-21. In the other match of Day Three, Dominican Republic dispatched Trinidad & Tobago in consecutive sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.
“We have improved step by step, working in our reception,” Mexico’s coach Sergio Hernandez said. “We haven’t achieved anything yet, but it is a small but great step.”
“It was an important victory and we hope the cup can help the younger players to increase their experience,” Brazilian coach Leonardo Roberley said.
Brazil 3, Argentina 0
The classical South American battle decided the first place of Pool A in front of a good attendance at the “Juan de la Barrera” Olympic Gym on day three. Brazil defeated Argentina 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) with another solid performance by Renan Zanatta who scored 14 points. Ricardo Lucarelli Sousa finished with 12 and Mauricio Borges with 11, also for Brazil, while Agustín Ramonda was Argentina’s best scorer with 11 tallies.
Mexico 3, United States 2
México defeated the United States in five sets (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15) and qualified to the semifinals as first place team of Pool B. Jesús Valdez registered 21 points for México, followed by Jorge Quiñones with 14. Tomas Aguilera and Daniel Vargas chipped in with 12 and 11, respectively. Taylor Sander scored 23 for the Americans, while Joseph Sunder finished with 20. Daniel McDonnell scored 14 and William Price 10.
Dominican Republic 3, Trinidad & Tobago 0
Dominican Republic clinched its first victory beating Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-16). Henry Omar Tapia converted 15 points for the Dominican Team, while German Recio recorded 11. Trinidadian captain Nolan Tash tallied 8 and Kevin Nimrod 6.
