Bulgaria upset Brazil on Day 5 of World Grand Prix

Serbia remain top of the standings after defeating Algeria on Saturday
Lausanne, Switzerland, August 10, 2013 – FIVB World Grand Prix debutants Bulgaria scored the biggest upset of the day on Saturday, handing Olympic champions Brazil their first defeat in this year’s competition. The Bulgarians won 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21) in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Both teams now have 4-1 win-loss records in this year’s tournament.

“They played a great technical game and their serve gave us a lot of problems,” Brazil coach José Roberto Guimaraes conceded.

The result leaves only three unbeaten teams in the competition: Serbia, China and Japan. Serbia (5-0, 15 points) top the standings and had Sanja Malagurski back after a long injury break as they cruised past Algeria 25-11, 25-12, 25-11 in Belgrade. China (5-0, 15 points) made short work of the Czech Republic, taking just over an hour in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13) victory in Hong Kong, while Japan (5-0, 14 points) had to work a little harder in their 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20) win over Kazakhstan in Poland.

Behind the top three, four teams – USA, Turkey, Italy and Bulgaria – have 4-1 records and 12 points, while Brazil have 11 points from a similar record. On Saturday, USA beat the Netherlands 3-0, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 and Italy overcame Cuba 3-0.

Russia and the Dominican Republic both won 3-0 to improve to 3-2 and nine points. Russia triumphed over Thailand, while the Dominicans overcame Caribbean neighbours Puerto Rico in Puerto Rico. Kazakhstan, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Algeria remain winless.

In Saturday’s other match, Germany beat Poland 3-0 in Poland.

On Sunday, the match-ups include undefeated China against last year’s bronze medallists Turkey in Hong Kong, while defending champions USA will go up against table-toppers Serbia in Belgrade.
