Two tickets to 2014 Men's World Championship up for grabs in Brazil

Bernardinho gives the instructions for the group

Cabo Frio, Brazil, August 5, 2013 – The 30th South American Senior’s Men Championship starts on Wednesday to decide the two teams from the South American Continent who will take part in the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship 2014 in Poland.

The South American Championship will be held at the Alfredo Barreto Gymnasium in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, from August 6 to 10. Six teams will participate in the tournament: Three-time defending world champions Brazil, Colombia and Chile (Pool A); Argentina, Venezuela and Paraguay (Pool B). The two finalists from this continental championship will qualify for the FIVB World Championship next year. The third continental spot will be decided at the Qualification Championship that will take place next year in Colombia.

In the first 29 editions, Brazil took 28 titles with the country not participating only in the 1964 edition, which was held in Argentina and won by the home team.

Brazil is once again considered the top team of the tournament for this year.

“The South American Championship is an important tournament for us. We need to increase the level of competition at the continental level, bringing other countries to face the strongest teams, which are currently Brazil and Argentina. This exchange is essential to help the development of other teams,” said Brazil head coach Bernardo Rezende.

“This tournament has been important to me since the youth championships,” said opposite hitter Leandro Vissotto. “It helps to give experience to the younger players.”

Argentina has a roster with three new names: wing spikers Agusttin Ramonda and Ezequiel Palacios from Cordoba and Formosa respectively, and opposite hitter Pablo Kukartsev, replacing the injured Ivan Castellani who will undergo surgery on his right knee.

Pool A: Brazil, Colombia, Chile
Pool B: Argentina, Venezuela, Paraguay
