Russia, Iran and Poland lead day of big comebacks
In their first World League meeting, Russia had to fight back from 0-2 and the loss of Alexey Spiridonov to a red card to overcome Germany 3-2 (21-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16,15-7) in Frankfurt. Nikolay Pavlov was key for Russia, picking up 29 points. In Katowice, hosts Poland had to overcome a mid-match lapse before narrowly getting the better of USA 25-22, 19-25, 13-25, 30-28, 18-16. Jakub Jarosz of Poland was named the MVP of the match and was the best scorer for his team with 21 points. Carson Clark of the USA topped all scorers with 24 points. The Americans failed to convert three match points in the fourth set. “It was a great match for both teams,” said USA captain Matthew Anderson. “We played very well as a team. Unfortunately, they came out on top.” In Havana, Iran also had to come back from two sets down before overcoming Cuba in five sets: 24-26, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 16-14.
