Chinese remain undefeated at China International

Thailand's Onuma Sittirak led her team with 17 points against Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Ningbo, China, May 18, 2013 - Hosts China remained undefeated to conclude the first phase of the China International Women’s Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 record, in preparation for the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on August 2.

China's winning streak was finalized with its defeat over Cuba on Sunday 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 25-18). Throughout the tournament, China also defeated Puerto Rico (25-12, 25-20, 25-14) and Thailand (1-1) in straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-9).

Thailand - whom the Chinese previously lost to on four occasions in the past four years - remains in second place with a 2-1 record after defeating Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-17, 25-16, 26-24) Sunday.

Onuma Sittirak and Pleumjit Thinkaow led Thailand with 17 and 14 points respectively while Puerto Rico’s Karina Ocasio-Malpica finished with 10. Thailand took advantage of the reception difficulties of Puerto Rico to dominate the first two sets and eventually win the match in 72 minutes.

Puerto Rico had its best performance in the third set and was up 23-20 in the third set, but couldn’t retain the advantage, ending the day in third place with a 1-2 record.

Cuba is still working to get a win, with a 0-3 record at the end of the first phase.

The event resumes Wednesday in the city of Shenzhen, with the same teams competing in a round-robin.
