Puerto Rico Women’s League boasts international flavour

Women's Volleyball is the most popular sport in Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico, February 11, 2010 – The 42nd edition of the Puerto Rico Women’s Superior League kicks off on Friday with 10 teams participating and players from USA, Canada, Croatia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela joining the home grown talent for the tournament, which culminates on April 10.

Defending champions Toa Baja and runner-ups Corozal, the most successful team in the league's history with 16 titles, are once again amongst the strongest sides in the competition. American Cassandra Busse, member of Team USA, Canadian Stacey Gordon, a mainstay in her country's squad, veteran Venezuelan Graciela Marquez and Puerto Rican superstar Aury Cruz, currently playing in Italy, are among some of the top players in the Toa Baja side.

The other clubs taking part are Bayamon, Caguas, Carolina, Catano, Guaynabo, Juncos, Mayaguez and Ponce, all of whom are also within a shout for the title.

Many of the imported players are current or former members of their national teams including USA Olympian Jennifer Joines who will play for Toa Baja.

Seventeen players in total are from the United States, with two a piece coming from Canada, Dominican Republic and Venezuela as well as one from Cuba, Croatia and Trinidad & Tobago.

“Teams have had early preparation and the imported players arrived on time to adjust to their sides before the start of the competition,” said Nelson Perez, President of the Puerto Rico Federation. “The international quality of the foreign athletes and the talent of our local players should contribute to an exciting season.”

The imported players included in the teams’ rosters are:
