FIVB Executive Committee to put forward major proposal at 31st FIVB World Congress in Dubai: Up to 14 players in each team with two liberos

The FIVB Executive Committee gathers in Dubai on Saturday

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, June 15, 2008 – The FIVB Executive Committee convened Saturday for the final time in preparation for the start of the 31st FIVB World Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, discussing FIVB Board of Administration proposals concerning the participation of players in National Leagues and preparing different recommendations for the assembly during the Congress.

The FIVB Executive discussed and unanimously approved to submit to the FIVB General Assembly a major change in Volleyball rules of having up to 14 players in each team, with a compulsory two libero players on the list. The Congress will discuss the proposal and make the final decision.


The FIVB continued to greet hundreds of speakers, delegates and invited media representatives from around the world ahead of the two-day meeting at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. FIVB Executive Members and 200 National Federation delegates will attend the Congress on Monday, June 16, and Tuesday, June 17.

Dr. Rubén Acosta will open proceedings at the Congress with the President’s Address before Guest of Honour H.H. Sheik Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, makes the Opening Speech.

The morning session of the Congress on Monday will include a Welcome Speech by UAE Volleyball Association President Mohamed Abdul Karim Julfar and a special video documenting the memorable Opening Ceremony in early May of “Château Les Tourelles,” FIVB’s stunning new headquarters on the banks of Lac Lèman in Lausanne, Switzerland.
