Porto Alegre Hosts Brazilian Domestic Opener

Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, February 27, 2007 - After spending the past three weekends on Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro competing for individual honors and challenging teams from the United States, the 17th domestic season of play on the Brazilian domestic tour starts here Thursday.

Headlining the 2007 opener will be Fabio Magalhaes and Larissa Franca, who captured the Brazilian King and Queen of the Beach competition, respectively, on Ipanema before leading the South American country to its first-ever Challenge Series sweep over the United States.

Fabio captured the ninth King of the Beach crown February 11 before teaming with Marcio Araujo to win the men’s Brazil vs. United States Challenge Series match by defeating Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers 21-15 and 23-21 February 18.  The victory was the fifth for Brazil in six Challenge Series matches with the United States since 2002.

Larissa, the most outstanding player on the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, claimed her first Queen of the Beach title February 17.  This past Sunday on Ipanema, Larissa and Juliana Felisberta Silva completed the Brazilian sweep for the 2007 Challenge Series by defeating Rachel Wacholder and Kerri Walsh 21-15 and 21-13.  It was the first win by the Brazilian women over their American rivals in four Challenge Series meetings.

The 2007 domestic opener will also feature Juliana and Larissa’s drive for a fifth-straight title on the Brazilian tour after finishing the 2006 campaign with a 20-match winning streak to capture the last four stops in Fortaleza, Recife, João Pessoa and Brasília.

In claiming their second-straight domestic title after placing second in 2004, Juliana and Larissa advanced to the finals in all 12 Brazilian tour stops last season with nine titles and a 58-3 mark.  In 24 domestic events since March 2005, Larissa and Juliana have an 116-7 record with 18 titles.

The chief challengers for Juliana and Larissa’s top spot on the Brazilian rankings are the teams of Talita Antunes/Renata Riberio, Leila Barros/Ana Paula Connelly and Adriana Behar/Shelda Bede.  Talita and Renata (45-13 match mark, six finals) defeated Juliana and Larissa twice for domestic titles in Joinville and Salvador last season.  Ana Paula and Leila (36-13, four finals), upset the top team for the Maceió crown.

Prior to Juliana and Larissa’s first domestic title in 2005, Adriana and Shelda had won six-straight Brazilian tour crowns and eight overall since 1996.  Injuries slowed the two-time Olympic silver medalist in 2006 as Adriana and Shelda competed in only eight domestic stops last season with a 23-12 mark and three bronze medal finishes.

Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos unseated Marcio Araujo and Fabio, as the top men’s team on the 2006 Brazilian tour with six titles, eight finals and a 49-13 record.  The reigning Olympic champions, Emanuel and Ricardo captured the 2002 and 2003 domestic tour crowns before finishing second in 2004 and 2005.

A SWATCH-FIVB World Tour champion the past four seasons with Ricardo, Emanual has also won three other domestic tour crowns, including two with Zé Marco de Melo (1994 and 1995) and one with Tande Ramos (2001).  Emanuel has 37 domestic titles to his credit since 1994 and 104 overall.

Only four players have won more Beach Volleyball titles in recorded history than Emanuel, including Karch Kiraly (148), Sinjin Smith (139), Randy Stoklos (122) and Kent Steffes (110).  However, Emanuel’s 60 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medals ranks first all-time with the four Americans only gathering a combined 26 international titles together.

The teams of Marcio Araujo/Fabio (40-12, six finals), Pedro Cunha/Franco Neto (36-15, three finals) and Alex Acco/Hevaldo Moreira (17-5) each won two men’s domestic titles last season.  While Marcio Araujo/Fabio and Pedro Cunha/Franco return together this year, Alex will team with Pedro Salgado while Hevaldo is paired with Rodrigo Monteiro.

The Brazilian tour will stage 16 events in 2007, including 12 “open” events.  The 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour “sandwiched” in the between the Brazilian domestic tour starting with the international season opener May 1-6 in Shanghai, China for both men and women as the campaign launches the Olympic qualifying process for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Brazil will host a double gender SWATCH stop in Forteleza September 25-30.  The international schedule also features the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Gstaad, Switzerland (July 24-29) where Marcio Araujo and Fabio are the defending champions.
