Seventeen-year old Xue Chen and 21-year old Zhang Xi completed a gold medal sweep for China by winning the women's finale at the Sports City venue by rallying to defeat third-seeded Eiko Koizumi and Shinako Tanaka of Japan.
With their 19-21, 21-11 and 15-13 win in 63 minutes, the second-seeded Xue Chen and Zhang Xi's gold medal win followed a men's title victory by fourth-seeded Shun Zhou and Jian Li, who upset Chinese rivals and top-seeded Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu 22-20, 12-21 and 15-13 for the top spot on the podium.
The gold medal victory avenged an earlier defeat to the third-seeded Koizumi and Tanaka, who defeated Xue Chen and Zhang Xi Wednesday 22-20, 15-21 and 19-17 in the longest match of the competition (70 minutes).
It was China's second-straight women's Beach Volleyball gold medal at the Asian Games. Wang Fei and Tian Jian captured the 2002 Asian title at Busan, South Korea. As a part of the top-seeded team in 2006, Tian Jia claimed the Asian Games bronze medal as she and Wang Jie scored a 21-12 and 21-15 in 33 minutes over fifth-seeded Kamoltip Kulna and Jarunee Sannok of Thailand.
