20th AVC General Assembly concludes in Dubai

The 21st AVC General Assembly will be held in Jiddan, Saudi Arabia in 2015
Dubai, United Arabia Emirates, October 4, 2013 – The 20th Asia Volleyball Confederation (AVC) General Assembly concluded its one-day meeting successfully at the Inter Continental Dubai Festival City in Dubai on Thursday.

The assembly meeting was chaired by AVC President Dr. Saleh Ahmad Bin Nasser and attended by FIVB and AVC Honorary Life President, Jizhong Wei as well as special guests FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F°, the United Arabia Emirates’ Minister of Culture, Youth & Community Development and President of the General Authority of Youth & Sports Welfare H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and Africa Confederation President Dr. Amr Elwani.

Dr. Bin Nasser welcomed the delegates representing 56 member national federations (including 11 proxies) and thanked them for their hard work and contribution to the volleyball development throughout the AVC region.

“Since the election of the new FIVB President, it has been a new era for each continent,” Dr. Bin Nasser said. “We had several successful meetings in discussing the development problems in the Oceania zone and national federations of category 1 and 2. AVC has almost fulfilled the goals of the strategic plan with the financial support of the FIVB. I hope, the future of volleyball in AVC will be satisfied to our wishes by the effort of everybody.” He also expressed his special appreciation to Mr. Wei as the first advisor to AVC. He was satisfied with the activities, seminars, courses, committee and council regular meetings in the last nine months but felt that the communication within AVC has not meet our wish despite great improvement and it is necessary to employ more experienced and youthful staff in AVC.

Dr. Bin Nasser also reminded members that three new offices have been set up respectively in Japan (for marketing and development issues), in Thailand (for technical issues) and in Kuwait (for financial and management issues) to expand AVC facilities.
“Our 65 member national federations support our development program and AVC has achieved a great improvement.”

The activity reports of five zones and Financial & Auditor’s report were presented and the following issues were approved:

-       Agenda of the 20th AVC General Assembly

-       Minutes of the previous General Assembly in Chinese Taipei, 2011

-       FIVB board member replacement

-       AVC board member replacement

-       AVC EC member replacement

-       AVC Coach Committee member replacement

-       AVC Referee Committee member replacement

-       AVC Finance Committee member replacement

Sheikh Nahyan opened the official part of the General Assembly before President Graça spoke, complimenting Dubai city as a miracle and expressed his gratitude to the UAE minister, AVC President, and all the Presidents of the national federations for their support to volleyball. He stressed, “the unity of the FIVB is very strong. We are working together to do a very good job. And then we will come back again to be one of the most important sports in the world.”

President Graça made an inspiring presentation with the key word “development”. He introduced the new FIVB vision and structure first before explaining that the FIVB is to develop as a credible organization and to establish a corporate governance model based on business units. He called on all the national federations, especially those less developed, to engage with beach volleyball as it is easier to start, proven by the example of the great success of the Continental Cup. He promised to all the national federations that the FIVB would support them if only they can create a development program.

As a key development initiative, President Graça presented nine court floors to nine national federations.

Asia Vice President, FIVB Executive Vice President and IOC member Rita Subowo stressed that the IOC has a Solidarity Fund for national federations to apply to help development.

The 20th AVC General Assembly continued its agenda with reports and proposals from the Sports Events Council, Referees Committee, Coaches Committee, Beach Volley Council, Development & Marketing Committee, Medical Committee and the Press Officer, which showed that each AVC department has been working with great zeal and enthusiasm to develop the sport.

The meeting also decided that the 21st AVC General Assembly in 2015 is to be held in Jiddan, Saudi Arabia.
