Turkish Federation launches “Volleyball Roadshow” project

The volleyball roadshow will stop in nine cities across Turkey, providing coaches with a unique opportunity to learn more about the sport and about the latest trends in volleyball coaching
Ankara, Turkey, July 16, 2014 - The Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF) launched their "Roadshow Volleyball" project in cooperation with the Turkish Olympic Committee (TOC) on Wednesday, with the ultimate goal being to provide young coaches and physical education teachers with free training.

The innovative project has been designed and conceived to provide children with the best opportunities to discover volleyball and take up the sport.

The roadshow will stop in nine different cities (Mersin, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Bursa, Mugla, Tekirdag, Artvin and Samsun) where two-day seminars will be taking place. The training clinics will provide all participants with education on volleyball coaching methods for beginners, basic drills, the set-up for preparing matches 6 on 6 and mini-volleyball games, as well as other basic technical and tactical elements. The roadshow will start on July 17-18 in Mersin and come to an end on August 16-17 in the city of Samsun.

The launch of this new project was held on Wednesday at Baskent Volleyball Hall in Ankara, the “heart” of the volleyball campus set up by the TVF in Turkey’s capital city. The ceremony was attended by TVF President Özkan Mutlugil, TOC Board Member Mustafa Keten and FIVB Instructors Athanasios Papageorgiou and Cengiz Akarcesme.

Mr Mutlugil stressed the importance of the project for Turkey’s volleyball family and added: “With this action we will educate coaches in nine different cities across our country. Athanasios Papageorgiou will lead the programme and roadshow that will continue for six weeks until mid-August. Cengiz Akarcesme will provide all participants with an insight into the latest training methods and techniques. This is a great step forward for Turkish volleyball. We want this project to become an annual, regular activity. I would like to thank the Turkish Olympic Committee and the instructors for all their support.”

TOC Board Member Mustafa Keten emphasised that the project is in line with the core goals set by the Turkish Olympic Committee: “We want to promote sport across our youth and we therefore decided to support this project which embodies the quintessence of the Olympic spirit and values. I would like to thank the Turkish Volleyball Federation for their work. The Turkish Olympic Committee will always support innovative projects like this one.”

FIVB Instructor Athanasios Papageorgiou – who is also a professor at the University of Cologne, Germany – praised the “Volleyball Roadshow” as a unique undertaking and commented that the projects designed by the Turkish Volleyball Federation always run as smoothly as a Swiss clock.

Cengiz Akarcesme stated his pride and happiness at being involved in the programme: “This project’s goal is to educate coaches. We hope that as many as possible will join us in each of the nine cities we are about to visit. This is a great opportunity for Turkish volleyball and we need to exploit its full potential.”
