Biggest junior volleyball event in the world a resounding success

The Power Cup 2014 gathered 6372 players and coaches in Raahe, northern Finland
Raahe, Finland, June 13, 2014 - The 30th edition of the Power Cup was held from June 5-8 in Raahe, northern Finland, with 776 teams from 153 clubs participating in what is today the biggest junior volleyball event in the world.

The design of the annual Power Cup tournament in Finland ensures that all teams play the same number of matches during the event. Youngsters also officiate as referees in their respective age groups.

Four tournament days include much more than volleyball, however. Accommodation at schools, mass dining and high level social programmes are synonymous with new experiences, new friends and memories to cherish.

This year's event brought together 6382 players and coaches. Teams came from Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Iceland to participate. The tournament area was in the middle of the town of Raahe, so the event also attracted 2500-4000 daily spectators.

The 2014 Power Cup was also a success with the media. National sports television channel, Yle sports, broadcasted Power Cup games and aired a seven minute report on the event at prime time on Saturday June 7 as part of their main national sports news.

Other coverage from the media included:
- Yle TV North broadcasting a ten minute report on Friday June 6.
- The local newspapers reporting daily with colourful photos.
- Local radio stations providing daily reports and interviews from the tournament.
- A big number of photos being taken and used by different media. These can be viewed by clicking here.

The tournament was once again a big success and the participants fully enjoyed the sunny volleyball weekend. A new real-time results service tailored for mobility, smartphones and tablets received extremely positive feedback. Participants, friends and family members back home were excited by this service.

The number of participating teams was slightly lower this year, which is expected when the tournament is held in the north of the country, where traveling times are often high. The financial result of the tournament, however, is in line with the budget for the event and sponsor interest continues to be high.

Next year, the Power Cup tournament will be organised in Vaasa (western  Finland). In 2016, it will take place in Hämeenlinna.
