Haiti completes three-week training programme for men's and women's teams
The training was held in Port au Prince from April 20 to May 11.
For the first two weeks, the men worked out for three and a half hours each morning and the women did the same in the afternoon. For the final week, the training time was reduced to two and a half hours per session.
For the first 10 days, the physical training concentrated on circuit endurance and development of strength, while for the latter period the training alternated between speed and plyometrics.
Tactical training was blended into the physical training with reviews of the basic techniques of offensive organisation, defensive organisation, counter attack and attack coverage.
At the end of the first week, the men’s and the women’s teams played a couple of practice games against teams from the north of the country with Dominican players.
An overall assessment was made of what was achieved and what issues need to be addressed.
Areas to be covered include a need for greater intensity, more physical work, work on basic techniques, higher-level training and a search for taller players.
The training sessions tackled many of these problems but many issues still need further work.
On a broader level, the federation is currently having to use a basketball court and there is a need for greater financial resources.
A document about basic techniques, physical work and high-level training is to be given to national coaches so that they can give instruction to club coaches, especially those dealing with international players or young players with high potential.
Haiti is hoping for more input from the FIVB and NORCECA to raise the standards of training in Haiti.
In addition, a search will be undertaken to find tall players around the ages of 12-14 to help boost future teams.
