Celebrating the power of sport
Promoted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a day to celebrate and encourage the power of sport for social change (or community development and well-being) in all corners of the world, and 2014 will mark its first ever worldwide celebration.
In 2013, in a historic decision, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly approved by consensus a proclamation establishing this Day to take place each year on April 6 - the date of the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.
The IOC and the Olympic Movement will be joining in global celebrations of sport as a catalyst for social change, development and peace in a number of ways including: showcasing how their contribution to sports development has benefited people; use this day as a platform to call for action, and advocate greater investment in sport, related infrastructures, physical education and access to sports programmes.
The FIVB already has plenty of examples of outstanding development initiatives which have have a major impact on communities, especially the FIVB Volley All Festival however International Day on April 6 is also a perfect opportunity to learn how sport has changed your life or your community. Share your story using #betterworld2014 on the FIVB or Olympic platforms.
