FIVB lends its support to first International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

The IOC has called on all federations to participate fully on April 6 in favour of greater recognition of sport as a tool for development and peace, and to harness the power of sport for athletes, youth and communities

Lausanne, Switzerland, April 1, 2014 – The FIVB will join other international federations on April 6 to celebrate the first ever International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

This will be the first time the day has been celebrated following the historic decision on August 23, 2013 when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly approved by consensus a proclamation establishing an International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.  The Day will be celebrated annually on 6 April, to mark the date of the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, by UN member states and other stakeholders.

The International Day offers a new opportunity to promote sport and physical activity as a universal language and an innovative tool for education, health, social inclusion, youth development, peace building and sustainable development at large. It also serves as a platform to advocate for the need to invest in sport further.

“As members of the Olympic family and of the world sporting movement, we have a role to play in this celebration by demonstrating the social impacts that sport, from grass roots practice to elite competition, has on our communities and their well being every day,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

The annual International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is also a fitting complement to the celebration of Olympic Day, which commemorates the founding of the modern Olympic Movement each year on 23 June. Millions of people in countries around the world participate in a wide variety of Olympic Day activities, from 10-kilometre runs, to group exercise sessions, tricycle races and educational and cultural activities.
