Lima helps out in Viva Volei project

Mauricio Lima has been providing guidance as part of the VivaVolei programme in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, January 24, 2014 – Double Olympic champion Mauricio Lima has been lending his considerable experience to the Viva Volei volleyball programme as it continued its growth in the Brazilian state of Alagoas.

The setter who featured for Brazil for over 15 years and won Olympic gold at Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004, as well as 2002 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship and five FIVB World League titles, opened the second coaching centre in the state.

“It is a great satisfaction to be here, because this is a project that provides social inclusion through sport, which for me is the best way to include these young people today,” he said. “I'm very happy to take part today.”

The VivaVolei program was created by the current FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° in 1999, while he was President of the Brazilian Volleyball Federation (CBV) in order to educate and socialize young people through volleyball. Currently the program has spread to 17 states in Brazil and won the support of UNESCO.

“I was motivated to start playing with the ‘silver generation',” Mauricio added. “Little did I know that five years later we would have started playing with some of these guys in my first Olympics in Seoul.”
