North Africa Project into second phase in Tunisia

Tunis, Tunisia, August 22, 2013 – Renowned Italian volleyball coach, Ermanno Piacentini has travelled to Tunisia to work together with local colleagues to help train and select the new generation of Tunisian athletes.

Piacentini’s work with the U17 men’s national volleyball team of Tunisia is part of the Volleyball Development Project in African countries (also known as ‘The North Africa project’) that was commissioned by FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° to help develop volleyball in Africa. This is the second stage of the project that focuses on talent identification in order to train athletes with potential in early stages of their careers.

As part of the training programme, Piacentini has been meeting with the technical supervision team prior to and following each session with the players. The meetings also give the invited coaches and instructors an opportunity to share important information and best practices in coaching techniques.

The FIVB has entrusted the Volleyball Federation of Italy to play an active role in the development of volleyball in Africa with special attention on the countries of North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia).

The project, led by the FIVB Development Department with the help of FIVB Board of Administration member from Italy, Renato Arena, started in April 2013 with internships and the participation of African youth selections in different tournaments.

The project will also see the FIVB and the Italian Volleyball Federation provide training and technical assistance at all levels: management, arbitration, organisational and competition over the next three years.
