St. Maarten makes bold steps in volleyball development

Philipsburg, Sint Maarten, July 24, 2013 - The Volleyball Association of Dutch Sint Maarten conducted a month long programme to help develop beach volleyball and encourage the growth of volleyball in schools.

The programme is a first step in the Volleyball Association’s plans to develop the sport locally, with a view to improving the participation of the Sint Maarten athletes in international competitions in order to give visibility to the country within the NORCECA beach circuit.

Until now, athletes from Sint Maarten who have represented the country in these championships, have either been too old to have a sustainable career in the sport or live outside the country.

"The country needs to start participating in NORCECA Beach Volleyball Championships urgently. Non-participation in these tournaments makes the sport unattractive. One way of improving its attractiveness is to use volleyball as entertainment," explains Coach Joao Carlos Moraes de Campos.

Over the course of the month, training sessions were held three times a week at the beach and volleyball training sessions held every day for beginners (male and female). The sessions aimed to keep the activity fun while encouraging athletes to take up the sport.

"I think the most important step is to support the athletes who live on the island and let them represent the country. Young blood and vitality is what will stimulate and create aspiring volleyball players,” concluded Coach de Campos.
