New FIVB development initiative makes debut in Italy
Montefiascone, Italy, June 11, 2013 - Hosts Italy, a selection coached by Andrea Giani preparing for the forthcoming Mediterranean Games, won the inaugural triangular tournament “Est Est Est” in Montefiascone, Italy which was also attended by Tunisia and Egypt on Thursday.
The “Azzurri” beat Tunisia 3-2 before overcoming the Egyptians of Antonio Giacobbe 3-1 (whom Italy had lost to in a tie-break in a friendly pre-tournament match). Tunisia beat Egypt 3-0 on the first day.
The FIVB has entrusted the Italy Volleyball Federation to play an active part in the development of volleyball in Africa with special attention on the countries of North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia).
The project, led by the FIVB Development Department with the help of FIVB Board of Administration member from Italy Renato Arena, started in April with internships and the participation of African youth selections in different tournaments.
“The tone has been set by this new development strategy with stronger FIVB federations providing good examples and assisting other member federations in their region,” FIVB Development Director Helgi Thorsteinsson said. “This is in line with the President’s policy which is concentrated on growing volleyball worldwide and seeing the bigger federations share their knowledge and know how. We are looking forward to this new innovative way of developing the sport of volleyball globally.”
In the coming days, two Italian coaches will travel to Tunisia to work together with their local colleagues for the next month to help train and select the new generation of Tunisians athletes.
The project will also see the FIVB and the Italian Volleyball Federation provide training and technical assistance at all levels: management, arbitration, organizational and competition over the next three years.
