Grassroots beach volleyball course in Northern Mariana

Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, May 14, 2012 – The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in cooperation with the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association (NMIVA) hosted a Grassroots Beach Volleyball training course last month, with the aim of teaching participants the fundamentals of beach volleyball.

The training programme, which was part of a series of FIVB Volleyball Cooperation Programme (VCP) courses, was sponsored by Fiesta Resort & Spa along with DoCoMo Pacific. This is the third course of its kind to be organised in the Northern Malvinas Islands since 2008.

The course was led by FIVB instructor Lauren McLeod, from Adelaide, Australia, who shared her wealth of knowledge and experience both as a former Olympic-hopeful and as coach of the Vanuatu women's national team.

The five day course consisted of 10-hours of classroom lectures and discussions covering a variety of issues including: the FIVB structure, international competition pathways, national federation development, athlete assessment, training programme design, structured goal-setting and more. The remaining 21-hours comprised hands-on practical implementation of theory. The week finished with a junior's training tournament where 28 youth participated in a fun, hot day of beach volleyball coached by the training course participants.
