British volleyball coaches share expertise in Egypt

Local female coaches at the workshop at the programme held at Egypt's Assuit University
Assuit, Egypt, April 05, 2013 - Following an initiative to increase the number of female volleyball coaches in Egypt, a coaching workshop was held at the Assuit University as part of a skills exchange partnership coaching programme in collaboration with UK Sport, Volleyball England and UNICEF Egypt.

The workshop was delivered by Freeda Bussey, Volleyball England Coach Educator. Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in Egypt, with high participation levels at the grassroots level. Both the Egyptian men’s and women’s national teams consistently win medals at the African Championships. However, female participation remains significantly lower attributed to the lack of  female coaches to deliver basic training in communities.

At the workshop, local female coaches were shown sport specific and generic coaching skills enabling them to deliver volleyball to girls in their local communities.

Using coaching Level 1 and 2 methodology, variations of the game, such as 2-aside and 3-aside volleyball were introduced to participants. Members of the Egyptian delegation translated training cards, used by Volleyball England coaches, so that participants could use them in future programmes.

The programme provided both UK Sport and Volleyball with a platform to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships with countries like Egypt.
The plan now is to create a new Assuit Volleyball coaches network for local female coaches to share delivery practices, understand their strengths and identify areas where international, national and local partners can help.
