Volleyball continuing growth in New Zealand

Volleyball continues to grow in popularity in New Zealand
Auckland, New Zealand, 13 March, 2013 – Volleyball in New Zealand continues its surge in popularity with recently released figures showing that it was the top summer sport in New Zealand schools.

New Zealand’s School’s Championships will take place in Palmerston North next week and a bumper entry of 143 teams is set to take part. Over 2,000 players and officials will fill the city's Arena Manawatu as they battle for the trophies in nine different grades.

The event is the largest single-sport participation event on the country's annual sporting calendar and is an increase of five teams on the 2012 entry. It follows on the heels of last month's record 125-team entry in the National Schools Beach Volleyball Championships that were held at Mount Maunganui.

The NZ Secondary School Sports Council recently released participation figures for 2012 and they showed that nearly 15,000 school participants played volleyball. The figures eclipsed all other summer sports to put it fifth overall across both summer and winter sports in popularity.
