Volley All festival brings together over 700 youths in Madagascar

The festival aimed to promote volleyball in schools and encourage 11 and 12 year old children to take up volleyball training or join clubs
Antsirabe, Madagascar, November 1, 2012 – Students from 77 schools, 26 volleyball programmes and 14 clubs, representing seven different communities, were drawn to Antsirabe, Madagascar for a Volley All festival on October 20.

The 734 participants were given instruction in basic techniques, then divided up into girls teams, boys teams and mixed teams. A massive tournament of 10-minute matches was held, with under-12 children being refereed by 15 and 16 year old trained players. Teaching young players about officiating was one of the goals of the event, along with promoting volleyball in schools and encouraging 11 and 12 year olds to take up volleyball through programmes and youth leagues.

Course director Jean Honoré Razafinjatovo said he was pleased with the results.

“All of Madagascar’s communities want to participate in festivals like these,” said Razafinjatovo. “The next edition should be even better because, after seeing this event shown on television, parents, physical education and sports teachers, and sponsors are coming forward to express their interest in this method of promoting volleyball at school.”

Organisers’ next challenge is to decide how best to reach far-off communities that can’t afford to send students to Antsirabe.
