Dowdy and Quiggle reach Kuala Lumpur main draw in spectacular comeback

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 30, 2019 – The United States’ Amanda Dowdy and Corinne Quiggle advanced to the main draw on Tuesday after a remarkable comeback in a tiebreaker to complete two qualification round wins in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Port Dickson Beach Open.

After posting a commanding 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) win in the first round against Romania’s Beata Viada and Ioana-Alexandra Ordean, Quiggle and Dowdy secured their place in the next round with a great comeback in the third set to win 2-1 (21-18, 20-22, 15-11).

“It was unbelievable,” Quiggle said. “We were both sitting there so relieved. It took both of us stepping up and pulling us up as a team, and giving it our all being aggressive in tight situations. We were down and we knew that we had to go for every ball.”

“We trusted the process in that match and let it develop. We just gave it our all and we battled hard out there,” Dowdy added.”

The USA pair is excited and they look forward to showing their best and competing with the best, including their compatriots Kerri Walsh Jennings and Brooke Sweat and Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Margareta Kozuch, who are seeded for the main draw.

“We would love to go up against Kerri (Walsh Jennings). She’s the best in the game. We love Laura Ludwig,” Dowdy said. “We’re stoked we’ve qualified and we are excited to compete tomorrow and just bring out our best. This is Corinne’s first 3-star and it’s my third, so we are a new team and we are focused on improving every match.”

“We have so much respect for these athletes,” Quiggle said. “They’ve been my idols. There are so many good teams in this tournament.”

Meanwhile, Sydney 3-star gold medallists Nicole Laird and Becchara Palmer, who earned a bye in the first round, bowed out in the second stage of qualification, when Poland’s Monika Brzostek and Aleksandra Wachowicz came up with a straight-set (25-23, 21-13) triumph. The Polish side earlier logged a 2-0 (21-17, 21-17) win against Switzerland’s Esmee Bobner and Zoe Verge-Depre.

Other teams making it to the next round with two wins were Czech Republic’s Martina Bonnerova/Martina Maixnerova, Ukraine’s sister tandem Inna and Iryna Makhno, Spain’s Paula Soria/Maria Belen Carro, Norway’s Ane Guro Tveit Hjortland/Victoria Faye Kjolberg, and two Russian pairs Ksenia Dabizha/Daria Rudykh and Ekaterina Syrtseva/Alexandra Moitseeva.
