Continental Cup resumes in Brasilia

Alison in action in Brasilia
Brasilia, Brazil, April 4, 2019 - Beach Volleyball Continental Cup action resumed in South America on Wednesday with 1st stage Group A action in Brasilia. Hosts Brazil ended the first day unbeaten, with four wins. Alison Cerutti/Alvaro Filho and Pedro Solberg/Vitor Felipe won twice each in matches against Bolivian teams. On Thursday, the Brazilians face Venezuelan pairs to decide the group winners.

Alison and Alvaro Filho debuted their partnership with two wins. In the first, they surpassed Ricardo Covarrbias and Sergio Franco (BOL) 2-0 (21-10, 21-10). Later in the day, they claimed another victory 2-0 (21-10, 21-12) over Edson Perez/Ruben Gonzales (BOL).

"We are very happy, we wanted to debut soon, we had about six training sessions together, but the team did very well," said Alison. "Our sideout worked very well, our defensive tactic too. It is a great responsibility to be representing our country, it is a competition that I have already won in 2013. We are happy, we hope to maintain regularity tomorrow. Our secret is talking a lot, inside and outside of the court, this is something fundamental at the beginning of work."

Pedro Solberg and Vitor Felipe also surpassed the doubles of Bolivia without difficulties. They first claimed a win over Edson and Gonzales by 2-0 (21-17, 21-13), and in the second round, triumphed over Cova/Franco also in two sets 2-0 (21-13, 21-11).

Brazil take on the Venezuelan teams on Thursday who are represented by Igor Hernandez/Hernan Tovar and Carlos Rangel/Jose Gregorio Gomez, who won the four matches against pairs from Paraguay on Wednesday. In the case of tie between Brazil and Venezuela, a Golden Set of 15 points will be played to decide the winners of the tournament.

The Continental Cup is one of four ways for beach volleyball teams to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In the first phase of the competition, the South American countries are divided into three groups. The champions from each group progress to the competition finals, which will be played in 2020.

In the women’s tournament, and following the withdrawal of the teams from Guyana, Brazil are guaranteed a place in the finals without playing on Wednesday. They will play Ecuador today, who claimed three wins in four matches Uruguay on Wednesday.
