Azerbaijan’s men and women book tickets to Continental Cup third round

On Sunday, Azerbaijan's men claimed one of two tickets on offer in Belgrade to progress to the third round of the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup
Belgrade, Serbia, August 31, 2014 - Just days after the end of the Serbian national championship, which was completed from Thursday to Saturday, beach volleyball fans from Serbia’s capital city are enjoying one of four second-round tournaments scheduled in the 2014-2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.

In each gender, teams from four different countries are competing for one of the two spots to progress to the third stage of the competition coming up next year, thereby taking a step towards participation in the beach volleyball tournament of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Both Azerbaijan’s men and women have achieved this objective, after claining victories in their matches in the semis and finals on Sunday. Azerbaijan’s men defeated Lithuania in their semifinal, and then went on to beat Bulgaria in the match for first place. The pairs from Azerbaijan dropped only one set in their two matches with the young duos from Lithuania, and after that played Bulgaria who had previously routed Albania without conceding a set. Azerbaijan’s show continued also in the final, where Leonid Gritsai/Bernardo Wermelinger Romano and Meilton Moises Santos Merces/Artem Fedorov did not drop a set in their respective matches with Toma Stankov/Silvestar Ivanov and Delcho Raev/Kirill Hadzhiev.

On Monday, Bulgaria will return to the sand playing the winners of the country v country starring Lithuania and Albania, and try to claim the second ticket on offer to progress to the third round.

Azerbaijan left their mark also in the women’s competition, where they easily edged Estonia in the semis without losing a set and then played hosts Serbia in the final. Vivian Da Canceicao Cunha/Zinaida Lyubimova and Iuliia Karimova/Raquel Goncalves Ferreira showed no mercy for the local heroines Milena Matic/Isidora Egic and Nina Skaric/Aleksandra Frajtovic, scoring two 2-0 victories to move on straight to the third round of the Continental Cup.

Serbia will get one extra chance to achieve this feat on Monday as they play the winner of the match starring Estonia and Albania.
