Youth Olympics men’s Beach Volleyball quarter-finals feature three Europe vs. South America matches
Nanjing, China, August 24, 2014 - With teams from the Europe and South America dominating the men’s Beach Volleyball action here Sunday at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics, Monday’s quarter-final action at the at the Nanjing Sports Park Complex venue will feature three matches between the two confederations.
The two confederations combined for 12 of the 16 men’s wins Sunday with teams from Argentina and Brazil winning twice each. Breaking into the European and South American “party” was Puerto Rico from the North, Central America & Caribbean Confederation.
Puerto Ricans Sergio Figueroa and Daniel Rivera prevented an exclusive quarter-final for the Europeans and South Americans as the Caribbean pair eliminated Mathias Berntsen and Anders Mol of Norway, 2-0 (21-23, 21-187 and 15-10) in a 47-minute match. Figueroa and Rivera now play Tigrito Gomez and Peter Hernandez of Venezuela, who ousted Renato Bogarin and Elioth Frutos of Paraguay 2-0 (21-18 and 23-21) in 35 minutes.
Of the four matches, one will be a repeat from group play as Pool A participants Uruguay and Finland will meet again Monday after the teams posted wins Sunday over pairs from Thailand and Indonesia, respectively. On the second day of competition August 18, Marco Cairus and Mauricio Vieyto of Uruguay defeated Miro Maattanen and Santeri Siren of Finland 2-1 (21-14, 11-21 and 16-14) in a 42-minute match.
On Sunday, Cairus and Vieyto earned a spot in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 (17-21, 21-12 and 15-9) win in 41 minutes over Surin Jongklang and Banlue Nakprakhong of Thailand while the Finns were out-lasting Mohammad Ashfiya and Rendy Licardo of Indonesia 2-1 (21-14, 17-21 and 15-10) in 42 minutes.
Reigning FIVB under-19 world champions Arthur Mariano and George Wanderley of Brazil had to win two matches Sunday starting with a victory over a team from Peru before eliminating Illia Kovaliov and Oleh Plotnytskiy of the Ukraine 2-0 (21-12 and 21-15) in 30 minutes. It was the second win for Arthur and George over the Ukrainians as the Brazilians defeated Kovaliov and Plotnytskiy for the gold medal at the U19 worlds in Porto, Portugal.
Arthur and George, who were forced into the early elimination after finishing second to Niklas Rudolf and Eric Stadie of Germany in their pool, will be challenged in the quarter-finals by Russians Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin. The Russians advanced to Monday’s action with a 2-0 (21-15 and 21-16 victory over Jake MacNeil and Andrew Richards of Canada.
The final quarter-final pair Monday has Santiago Aulisi and Leandro Aveiro of Argentina challenging Rudolf and Stadie of Germany. Aulisi and Aveiro won two matches Sunday by first eliminating a team from Lithuania followed by a 2-1 (21-11, 21-23 and 15-13) win in 48 minutes over Arnaud Gauthier-Rat and Arnaud Loiseau of France. The Germans advanced with a 21-18 and 21-15 win in 33 minutes over Johannes Kratz and Moritz Pristauz-Telsnigg of Austria.
