South American countries net women’s Youth Olympic pool titles

Paraguay’s Michelle Valiente (pictured) and Erika Bobadilla capture Pool D Friday at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

Nanjing, China, August 22, 2014 - The last two women’s Beach Volleyball pool titles for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics were clinched here Friday by pairs from Paraguay and Uruguay.

Lia Fortunati and Maria Rotti of Uruguay had to await the final results of the matches with teams from Turkey (Esra Cetin/Selin Yurtsever) and Chinese Taipei (Tzu-Yi Pan/Yu-Rong Song) to know their fate as all three teams finished atop the Pool C standings with 4-1 records.  Uruguay won the group due to having the best point ratio for matches played between the three teams.

Despite losing 2-1 (19-21, 21-16 and 15-13) in 53 minutes to Mona Gesslbauer and Julia Radl of Austria, Paraguay’s Erika Bobadilla and Michelle Valiente captured Pool D where three teams also posted 4-1 pool records.  The South Americans also won the tie-breaker due to a better point ratio in matches with Austria and France (Lezana Placette/Alexia Richard).

Beach Volleyball teams from Brazil (Pool B), Canada (Pool A), Germany (Pool E) and Russia (Pool F) clinched the top spots in their pools Thursday.  Each pool winner along with the best two second-place finishers (Turkey and Latvia) earn first-round “byes” when the 24-team single-elimination bracket begins Sunday.  The pairings for elimination rounds will be announced Saturday afternoon.

Women’s Key Points
• Brazilian Eduarda Lisboa, who won the FIVB U19 title with Andressa Cavalcanti in Porto, is competing in the Youth Olympics with 15-year old Ana Patricia Silva. The 16-year old Eduarda teamed with Ana Patricia to win Pool C with a 5-0 match mark.
• Two teams that reached the podium at the recently-completed FIVB under-19 world championships in Portugal - Germany (silver, Lisa Arnholdt/Sarah Schneider) and Canada (bronze, Megan and Nicole McNamara) - also won all their group matches with wins Friday over pairs from China and Italy, respectively.
