Puerto Rican and Russian men clinch pool play top spots

Sergio Figueroa (right) congratulates partner Daniel Rivera after the Puerto Ricans clinch their pool Thursday by defeating France in a match featuring two unbeaten teams.

Nanjing, China, August 21, 2014 - With the top spot in four of the six women’s pools in the Beach Volleyball competition at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, only Puerto Rico and Russia clinched top spots in a group play here Thursday during the fourth day of play at the venue located within the Nanjing Sports Park Complex.

Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Yarzutkin scored their fourth-straight group win early Thursday for Russia by defeating Mark Alvarez and Erik Flores of Guatemala 2-0 (21-15 and 21-11) in a 26-minute Pool E match.  Stoyanovskiy and Yarzutkin conclude group play Friday against Chamika Mallawa and Isuru Siddihaluge of Sri Lanka.

If the Russians are defeated by Sri Lanka Friday, Stoyanovskiy and Yarzutkin hold the tie-breaker in the group over their closest rival by defeating Mathias Berntsen and Anders Mol of Norway in the second-round Monday.  With their victory Thursday, the Russians are now guaranteed a first-round “bye” when the 24-team single-elimination bracket begins Sunday.

In the first evening match Thursday, Sergio Figueroa and Daniel Rivera of Puerto Rico scored a 2-1 (21-17, 18-21 and 15-10) win in 48-minute over Arnaud Gauthier-Rat and Arnaud Loiseau of France in a match of unbeatens in Pool C.  Figueroa and Rivera (4-0) finish group competition Friday against Ghana (1-3) while France (3-1) meets Peru (2-2), a team that the Puerto Ricans defeated Tuesday.

Men’s Key Points

  • Teams from Uruguay (Pool A) and Germany (Pool B) lead their groups and must defeat teams from Kazakhstan and New Zealand to avoid possible three-ways tie-breakers.

  • With Surin Jongklang and Banlue Nakprakhong of Thailand defeating Illia Kovaliov and Oleh Plotnytskiy of Ukraine, 2-1 (23-25, 22-20 and 18-16) in 52 minutes in the last match to finish Thursday, four teams are tied atop Pool D with 3-1 records.  Argentina and Canada are tied with the Thais and the Ukrainians in the group.

  • Venezuela and Indonesia are both 4-0 in Pool F with the winner of Friday’s final match taking the group title.

  • After being upset by a team from Germany on the second day of pool play, 2014 FIVB under-21 world champions Arthur Mariano and George Wanderley of Brazil have won their next two matches by defeating teams from New Zealand and Lithuania.  Arthur and George won the FIVB’s under-19 world championships three weeks ago in Porto, Portugal.

  • Kovaliov and Plotnytskiy, who placed second at the FIVB U19 worlds, are 3-1 in Pool D after losing to a team from Thailand Thursday.

  • FIVB U19 bronze medal medalists Tigrito Gomez and Peter Hernandez of Venezuela also won their fourth Pool F match Thursday by defeating a pair from the United States.
