USA’s Bourne/Hyden and Czechs Kolocova/Slukova strike gold in Berlin

 
The 2014 FIVB World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam podium

Berlin, Germany, June 22, 2014 - USA’s Tri Bourne and John Hyden and Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova from the Czech Republic claimed the gold medals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam on Sunday.

 

Bourne and Hyden won their first World Tour medal ever with a 2-0 win (21-17, 21-11) over fellow Americans Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena in the final on the Washingtonplatz centre court.

 

Kolocova and Slukova claimed their second gold in one month after winning the Prague Open in May. In the Berlin final they defeated Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta da Silva 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-12).

 

The bronze medals went to Brazil’s Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison Cerutti and Germany’s Karla Borger and Britta Büthe.

 

USA’s Bourne/Hyden win first World Tour gold in Berlin

 

Tri Bourne and John Hyden won their first World Tour gold medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Berlin smart Grand Slam on Sunday. They beat their fellow Americans Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena 2-0 (21-17, 21-11) in the final in the German capital. Read more

 

Kolocova and Slukova crowned as Berlin smart Grand Slam champions

 

Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova won their second gold in only one month by winning the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam on Sunday. The Czech team defeated Brazil’s Maria Antonelli and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 15-12) in a very entertaining final. Read more

 

All-American men’s final at the Berlin smart Grand Slam

 

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Berlin smart Grand Slam will feature an all-American men’s final, with both teams coming from qualification. Tri Bourne and John Hyden defeated Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Pedro Solberg Salgado 2-0 (21-16, 21-13) in the first semifinal and Ryan Doherty and Nick Lucena booked a 2-1 win (15-21, 21-18, 15-11) over another Brazilian team, Bruno Oscar Schmidt and Alison Cerutti. The gold medal teams of the FIVB Berlin smart Grand slam each earned $57,000, the silver $43,000, the bronze $32,000 and fourth place $24,000.

 

Berlin hosted a World Tour event for the 15th time for men and the 9th time for women. After two years at the Olympic Park, the Berlin smart Grand Slam moved back to the city centre.

 

The centre court and the second court were erected at the Washingtonplatz in front of the central train station and another three courts were set up at the Beach Mitte beach club, 15 minutes down the road.

 

The Berlin smart Grand Slam was the seventh event of the 2014 FIVB World Tour as well as the third of ten double-gender FIVB Grand Slam tournaments currently on the 2014 calendar. Next stop on the World Tour is the Stavanger Grand Slam (June 24-28).
