Turkish Volleyball inaugurates beach volleyball centre during youth continental cup final

The three-court beach volleyball center is the result of the fruitful cooperation between the Turkish Volleyball Federation and Akdeniz University in Antalya
Antalya, Turkey, May 16, 2014 – The inaugural CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Final will take place on May 16 and 17, which will also mark the inauguration of the brand new beach volleyball facility, jointly supported by the Turkish Volleyball Federation and Akdeniz University in Antalya.

The two institutions wisely planned the concept behind the project for the new beach volleyball facility – Akdeniz University provided the land, while the Turkish Volleyball Federation provided the construction and facility management. The purpose-built beach volleyball facility will function for various activities of the national federation and the university.

Ozkan Mutlugil, Turkish Volleyball Federation President, underlined the objective to raise the level of beach volleyball in the country, which the new facility takes them a step towards achieving this goal.

“We are willing to make more investments in beach volleyball and Antalya will be our centre,” said Mutlugil. “Akdeniz University cooperated with us and gave us the place for the courts. We have three main courts that meet international standards and we have one warm-up court. We are very proud to host the 2014 CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Final at our new facility.”

Aydin Ozdemir, head of the Health, Culture and Sports Department at Akdeniz University, added that their academic institution wanted to contribute beach volleyball’s progress in Turkey.

“This project is really important to us,” Ozdemir explained. “After our meeting with President Mutlugil, we said we are all in because we are trying to develop young people’s attraction to sports. We will be very happy to be a part of Turkish beach volleyball.”

The CEV Youth Continental Cup Final, which will determine Europe’s representatives in beach volleyball at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games, was originally scheduled to start on May 15 but because of the declaration of national mourning for the coal mine tragedy, the matches were rescheduled for Friday. The young athletes got the chance to test the new courts for an extra day of practice and preparation before the start of the competition.
