Treble FIVB world champion Emanuel ready to end wait for South American Games gold

Emanuel Rego is out to add another medal to his bulging collection
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 11, 2014 – Despite being one of the most decorated players in beach volleyball including three FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, there is one laurel that Emanuel Rego doesn’t have in his collection – the South American Games gold.

Emanuel is about to embark on his 21st season since he made his debut in the 1993-94 season at the FIVB Rio de Janeiro Open and since then he has won Olympic Games gold, silver and bronze, three FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships and five FIVB World Tour titles.

In total across FIVB tournaments, Olympic Games, continental and domestic tournaments he has finished on the podium 311 times, with a personal haul of 152 titles.

“It's true, it would be a new title for me,” he said. “Normally I haven’t been able to play in it due to a the World Tour, but this year the Brazilian Team technical commission made the Games one of their priorities for the year.”

The South American Games are currently taking place in Santiago, Chile from March 7-18, with the beach volleyball competition running from March 12-15. Emanuel and Pedro Salgado are one of two Brazilian pairings; with his former partner Allison Cerutti linking up with Bruno Schmidt in the other.

Emanuel and Pedro will start their campaign against Argentine duo Pablo Bianchi and Facundo Del Coto.

“I went to Chile when I was about 15-years-old,” Emanuel said. “I was playing for my club and we travelled from Santiago to Parana after. There were a number of local and state tournaments and that time we faced three Chilean schools and were champions in four of the categories.”
