Double gold for Argentina in Chilean stop of South American Beach Volleyball Tour

Viña del Mar, Chile, February 9, 2014 – Argentine beach volleyball got a huge boost on Sunday when teams in both genders topped the podium on the last day of the second stop of the South American Beach Volleyball Tour in Viña del Mar.

In the women’s competition the final match was played between Argentina’s Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug and Brazilians Thais-Fabiola. The Argentine pair took the first set but the Brazilians fought back to win the second. In the third and definitive set, Argentina pushed ahead to win the gold medal 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-7).

In an earlier semifinal match, Gallay/Klug beat the best Uruguayan pair, Lucia Guigou/Eugenia Nieto 2-0 (21-12, 21-12). In the other semi-final, Brazilians Thais/Fabiola defeated Agudo-Brito from Venezuela.

In the men’s competition Argentina’s Ian Mehamed/Julian Azaad defeated Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt 2-1 for the gold medal. The Argentine pair won the second stop of the Argentine National Beach Volleyball Tour in Cerrito and silver in Viña del Mar in 2013.

In the semifinals Ian Mehamed/Julian Azaad beat Uruguayan pair, Renzo Cairus/Nicolas Zanotta 2-0 (22-20, 21-19) while Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt played a dazzling semi-final match  to defeat Brazil’s Allison Francioni/Gistavo Carvalhaes 18-16 in a tie-break.
