Brazil leave the competition behind at South American beach tour in Macaé

Brazil finished with four medals while Argentina obtained two at the beginning of the 2014 season.

Macae, Brazil, January 27, 2014 – The opening round of the 2014 South American Tour was wrapped up in the Brazilian city of Macaé on Sunday with players from the home country leading the way.

Neide Bento Sabino/ Carol Horta and Allison Cittadin/ Gustavo Carvalhaes were crowned champions in the women’s and men’s competitions, respectively. It was an all-Brazilian podium in the women’s competition with Elize Maia/ Fernanda Berti in second place and Eduarda Santos Lisboa/ Thais Rodrigues Ferreira in third.

Argentina did well in the men’s competition with a silver medal for Pablo Bianchi/ Facundo Del Coto, while Ian Mehamed/ Julian Azaad won bronze. Among the women's teams, Ana Gallay/ Georgina Klug finished in the best four.

On Sunday, the best four teams from each gender faced off. Argentines Gallay/ Klug faced a demanding match in the women’s semifinals against the best Brazilian home team of Fernanda Berti/ Elize Maia. The home team took the match 2-0 (21-8, 21-17) although Gallay/ Klug fought back valiantly in the second set.

Gallay/ Klug then had to play Duda/ Thais for the bronze medal. Although the teams were evenly matched, the Brazilian girls eventually won 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) to leave the Argentine team without a podium finish.

The men's competition saw a semifinal between two Argentine teams, with Del Coto/ Bianchi defeating Mehamed/ Azaad 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-9). Mehamed/ Azaad won the bronze medal as the Brazilian team of Hevaldo/ Jo withdrew from the competition due to an injury.

The final was a classic match between Argentina and Brazil. Del Coto/ Bianchi had the chance of winning the first set 20-17 but Allison/ Guto took five straight points to win 22-20. With the win the host team grew in confidence and took the second set 21-16 to clinch the gold medal.
