Ghana and Nigeria claim gold at Zone 3 Beach Volleyball tournament

Ghana men's team won the gold medal at the Zone 3 Beach Volleyball tournament
Takoradi, Ghana, December 24, 2013 – The Ghana men’s team and the Nigeria women’s team clinched the gold medals of a Zone 3 Beach Volleyball tournament that featured six teams in each age category at the Last Hour Beach Resort in Takoradi, Ghana, from December 13 to 15.

The competition was organised by the Ghana Volleyball Association in partnership with the Western Regional Volleyball Association. The partners were supported by the Ghana Manganese Company and the Ghana Olympic Committee as well as Sky FM, Dynamite FM, Obonoo FM, Asempa FM, Radio Universe, Agoo FM and various print media.

The tournament featured a pair in each gender from Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Hosts Ghana fielded two pairs in each gender from Greater Accra and a pair each from the Western region, where the competition took place.

Playing before a large crowd of spectators at the Last Hour Beach Resort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the players displayed a high level of skill as they battled in the sand.

In the men’s category, Ghana’s second-seeded team of Isaac Barnes and Laud Hammond took gold as they beat the top seeds Seidu Ajanaku and Evans Tagoe 2-1.

Nigeria settled for the bronze medal as they beat the Takoradi team.

The Nigeria women put all their experience into play to beat Ghana’s A Team 2-0 for the gold medal with a very close score of 26-24, 21-19.

The Ghana B Team took the bronze medal in a tight fight against the Togolese ladies. Ghana lost the first set 13-21 but Patricia Habada combined beautifully with Beatrice Nortey to take the last two sets 21-14, 15-13.

The Ghana Volleyball Association and its partners have promised to organize the same competition again next year.
