Canada, US teams eye spot in Nanjing Youth Olympic Games

Fajardo, Puerto Rico, December 8, 2013 – Jake MacNeil and Andrew Richards of Canada, among the boys, and Suzanne Muno and Sarah Sponcil of United States in the girls’ competition finished as the top ranked teams in the preliminary phase of the NORCECA Central Zone Beach Volleyball Qualification Tournament towards the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games on Saturday.

Both teams went undefeated in the round-robin to determine the seeding for Sunday’s semifinals at Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo. The Cannucks won their three matches in the opening day while the Americans triumphed in all their four outings.

In the boys’ competition, MacNeil and Richards go against Luis Ramos and Jesus Rodriguez of Mexico and the other semifinal sees Louis Richards and Torey DeFalco of USA challenging Puerto Rico’s Sergio Figueroa and Eric Delgado.

In the girls’ event, Muno and Sponcil meet Puerto Rico’s Lina Bernier and Eva Torruella while twins Megan and Nicole McNamara of Canada are set to play against Mexico’s combo of Diana Valdez and Stephanie Burnside.

MacNeil/Richards opened with a 23-21, 21-18 victory over the local Puerto Rican pair of Sergio Figueroa and Eric Delgado and continued with a well fought victory in three sets 15-21, 22-20, 17-15 against Mexicans Ramos and Rodriguez.

They capped the day with a 21-18, 22-20 triumph over Louis Richards and Torey DeFalco of United States, who finished in second place with a 2-1 win-loss record.

Muno and Sponcil downed Dominican Republic’s Magen Bolton and Pamela Jaime 21-11, 21-9 and saw off Valdez/Burnside 21-11, 21-19. They continued with a 21-15, 21-15 victory over the McNamaras for their third win and outplayed Bernier/Torruella 28-26, 21-12.

Boys’s results: USA d MEX 2-0 (21-9, 21-17), CAN d PUR 2-0 (23-21, 21-18), CAN d MEX 2-1 (15-21, 22-20, 17-15), USA d PUR 2-0 (21-15, 21-14), CAN d USA 2-0 (21-18, 22-20), PUR d MEX 2-0 (21-19, 21-18).

Preliminary Phase Positions: 1. Canada (3-0), 2. United States (2-1), 3. Puerto Rico (1-2), 4. Mexico (0-3).

Girls’ results: CAN d PUR 2-0 (21-12, 24-22), USA d DOM 2-0 (21-11, 21-9), CAN d MEX 2-0 (21-19, 21-18), PUR d DOM 2-0 (21-16, 21-11), USA d MEX 2-0 (21-11, 21-19), CAN d DOM 2-0 (21-7, 21-14), MEX d PUR (21-14, 21-12), USA d CAN 2-0 (21-15, 21-15), MEX d DOM 2-0 (21-15, 21-15), USA d PUR 2-0 (28-26, 21-12).
