And the countdown begins to the Durban Open

South Africa's Judith Augoustides is also scheduled to take part in the event

Durban, South Africa, December 3, 2013 – With the onset of December, there is now a little more than a week left until the Durban Open, scheduled to take place in the South African city from December 11 to 15.

Durban’s New Beach has been transformed into an impressive sporting arena, with construction teams working around the clock to get the VIP centre and stands ready a week ahead of the start of the global beach volleyball championship.

World class hotels and restaurants now line the beach with hotels filled to capacity during tournament time. The location of these hotels will allow guests to make their way to the stands easily in order to take in the beach volleyball action by the best players in the world.

“I am very happy with the progress made on the beach,’ said promoter Sunil Geness.

“In addition to getting the print and electronic media on board for the FIVB extravaganza our well coordinated media blitz has targeted schools, colleges, universities, business, government, sports dealerships, shopping malls, taxi ranks and social media to create an awareness for the final leg of the FIVB Open for the 2013 season.”

“We are bracing ourselves for a huge turnout of spectators,” added Sunil Geness

South Africa has hosted one women’s and three men’s FIVB tournaments, and the only previous event in Durban was a men’s open event on the FIVB World Tour held in 1996, with Brazil’s Rogerio Ferreira/Guilherme Marques winning the gold medal over USA’s 1996 Olympic silver medalists Mike Dodd/Mike Whitmarsh.

The men’s FIVB World Tour has played three times in Cape Town (1995, 2004, 2005) although the only double-gender event was the 2005 tournament.
