China, Kazakhstan rule the 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship

China's Wang Fan and Zheng Yixin placed first in Pool D

Wuhan, China, November 8, 2013 – China and Kazakhstan brought forth the most pool winners of all the participating National Federations on Friday at both the men’s and women’s tournaments at the 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship.

China’s Yue Yuan and Ma Yuanyuan topped Pool C for the women, while Wang Fan and Zheng Yixin placed first in Pool D, with the highest set ratio among Australia and Vanuatu, who also scored one win and one loss in the pool matches. Wu Jiaxin and Bao Jian topped Pool B with a win again second seeded Kuleshov Alexey and Yakovlev Dmitriy from Kazakhstan, while Li Jian and Hali Kejiang continued their victory to rank first in Pool C.

Kazakhstan also saw success for both the men’s and women’s tournament, dominating Pool A with straight wins. Mashkova Tatyana and Tsimbalova Irina defeated Vanuatu’s Joshua Joyce and Matauatu Linline, as well as Numwong Rumpaipruet and Hongpak Khanittha in two short matches and ranked first in the women’s Pool A. Early in the morning, Dyachenko Alexandr and Sidorenko Alexey crushed Iran and Japan of Pool A, with their eyes on gold in the men’s tournament.

China’s Wu Jiaxin and Bao Jian surprised Kuleshov Alexey and Yakovlev Dmitriy to top the pool

In a direct battle for top position in Pool B of the men’s tournament at the 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship, Wu Jiaxin and Bao Jian defeated the 2012 Asian Beach Games silver medalists Kuleshov Alexey and Vakovlev Dmitriy of Kazakhstan in three sets 3-0 (15-21, 21-18, 15-13) on Friday.

Kazakhstan destroyed China’s hopes in the first set with heavy spikes and strong blocks, and continued to take the lead at 7-5 in the second set before Wu Jiaxin’s block helped the team recover to tie the score at 13-13. Two unforced errors by Kuleshov Alexey cost them the set before Bao Jian spiked over the block of Yakolev Dmitriy with a wonderful placement in the corner.

In the thrilling tiebreak, Kazakhstan took an early lead by 3-1, but the Chinese tied the match at 11-11 and they persevered with Bao Jian claiming the victory with a spike in the line.

“It was a very tough match,” Bao Jian said, “but it is the top team in the pool and you always have top matches. When you play top team in the pools you must be concentrated. The match played yesterday was also very close. So this is satisfaction. I think the key in winning today was not being nervous.”

“It was my first time to team up with Bao Jian,” said Wu Jiaxin. “We made many errors in the first set so during the timeout, I told him we need to fight hard and not to think about the final result. Finally we did it and he scored most of the points in the critical moments.”

Wang Fan and Zheng Yixin aim for Top 4

Wang Fan and Zheng Yixin professed hopes of a top four finish in Wuhan following their debut match Thursday in the 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship. The Chinese team rose to the challenge against Asia’s best in Wuhan.

Despite losing their final pool match to Vanuatu’s Elwin Miller and Iatika Henriette in 58 minutes, who then eventually lost in the afternoon to Artacho Mariafe and Laird Nicole of Australia, the Chinese women finally topped Pool C with the best set ratio points.

Wang Fan and Zheng Yixin edged the first set 21-15, but mistakes at crucial moments cost them the match. They lost the second set at 20-22 and then 16-18 in the deciding set.

“We are pleased,” said Zheng Yixin. “But we are not so happy with our performance today, and this is the third international tournament we have played together. Eventually we progressed to the next round while in Xiamen and Phuket we did not make it.”

“To get into the top four, there is still a long way to go and we have to improve a lot,” said since October and if we get to the top four at the Asian Beach Volleyball Championship, we will be satisfied. I hope this experience here will help us to find the problems so we can be more concentrated during training in the winter. We need to do better to have a good result next September for the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.”

The 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship will continue at 9:00 (GMT +8) Saturday with round 16 for both genders before advancing to the quarterfinals in the afternoon. The Men and Women's semi-finals will be played on Sunday morning while the Men’s gold medal match is scheduled at 15:00 (GMT +8) and the Women’s at 16:00. All matches on Sunday will be televised live.

The Asian Beach Volleyball Championship previously was held in Haiku, China from 2009 until 2012 before being moved to Wuhan in the central part of China along Yangtze River.

The Championship in Wuhan will conclude the 2013 season for AVC Beach Volleyball.
