2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship begins

The Asian Beach Volleyball Men’s elite is led by Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko from Kazakhstan

Wuhan, China, November 6, 2013 – The 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball season is wrapping up with the most important tournament of the year, as the championships begin Wednesday in Wuhan city.

The 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship runs from Nov. 7-10, at the Wuhan Olympic Sports complex, where five courts at the ancient city will welcome the tournament for the first time. From 2009 to 2012, the tournament took place in the harbor city of Haikou, China.

Twenty-eight teams from nine National Federations will fight for the title of Asian Champion with a FIVB/AVC ranking point of 250 per person, and USD $10,000.

“I am very proud here to stage the first ever Asian Beach Volleyball Championship in the history,” said Chairman of Wuhan Sports Authority, Mr. Wang Qihua. “Wuhan is a city famous for the sport and we organized several world-renowned tournaments here including the 2012 Thomas & Ulber Cup for Badminton, 2011 FIBA Asia Championship for basketball, as well as the top FIVB properties such as 2009 World League and 2013 World Grand Prix.

“With a great success in the past 2012 London Olympic Games, the sport of beach volleyball must be introduced to our city and we will make all means to spread it over in Hubei Province to increase the popularity of this sport as much as possible.”

The Asian Beach Volleyball Men’s elite is led by Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko from Kazakhstan, who won the silver medal at the 2012 Asian Beach Games, and also participated in the Main Draw players in 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Championship in Stare Jablonki, Poland and nine 2013 FIVB Grand Slams.

In the women’s entry list, Elwin-Iatika from Vanuatu will continue to fight for the crown of Asian Queen of the beach. The pair lost the tournament last year to 2013 FIVB World Champions Xue-Zhang Xi from China. They will be joined by Udomchavee-Radarong from Thailand, Champion of 2012 Asian Beach Games as well as Mashkova-Tsimbalova from Kazakhstan, who seeded first in the tournament.

Other contenders for the medals include local heroine Yue Y.-Ma Y.Y, who won the silver medal in 2010 Asian Games as well as the runner up in the first edition of AVC Continental Cup Final.

The 2013 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship involves a round-robin system with four pools for each gender, then continue in 16-teams-bracket by single elimination format and will conclude with Men’s Final scheduled at 15:00 (Beijing time) and Women’s Final at 16:00.
