Thai beach volleyball team eyes top 10 finish in Phuket

At the start of the season Radarong/Udomchavee were ranked No. 94 in the world, but their ranking has gradually improved to No. 40 over this year's season.

Phuket, Thailand, October 3, 2013 - Thailand’s No 1 women’s beach volleyball team of Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee are looking to achieve a top ten finish at the FIVB Beach Volleyball, Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT, which will be staged later this month on Karon beach, Phuket from 29 October to 3 November.

A total of five Thai teams have entered the tournament with the number one team joined in the main draw by Rumpaipreut Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak, and returning veterans Usa Tenpaksee and Yupa Phokongploy. The other two teams Srinuch Kawfong and Saowaros Tangkaeo as well as Ariya Laosaengsa and Kitja Khantarak will enter the qualifying draw.

This year is the first time that Varapatsorn Radarong and Tanarattha Udomchavee have seriously competed in beach volleyball Open and Grand Slam events. They currently stand at no 40 in the world rankings and they have already made history becoming the first Thai team ever to achieve a top 5 finish in an international beach volleyball tournament. They achieved this feat at the recently held Anapa Open in Russia, a repeat of their fifth place finish at the 27th University Games in Kazan.

Prior to competing in Phuket, Varapatsorn and Tanarattha along with Rumpaipreut Numwong and Khanittha Hongpak will compete in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 8 to 13 October.

Their coach Mr. Petcharat Putsorn believes that Varapatsorn and Tanarattha should be able to improve to 35 in the world rankings by the year end.

Talking about the team’s prospects in Phuket, Putsorn said, “The tournament will be very tough as so many of the world’s top teams will be competing. However as it is our home event it will give the girls extra impetus to do well and we can reasonably expect a top 10 finish, anything better than that will be a bonus.”

The Thai teams will also be supporting some of the grass root activities in Phuket such as the PTT beach Volleyball Clinic and PTT Schools Cup.
