World’s top six teams expected at Phuket Open

Brazil's Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Tainana Lima, expected participants in the Phuket Open, will be looking for a possible sixth win this season.

Phuket, Thailand, September 25, 2013 - The Phuket Open, the penultimate Open event on the 2013 beach volleyball calendar is expected to bring together the top six teams in the world rankings this October.

Heading the list of possible entries is the No. 1 team in the world rankings, the Brazilian pair of Taiana Lima and Talita Antunes. The two joined forces for the first time this year  and have taken the sport by storm winning the Shanghai, The Hague, Rome, Long Beach and Berlin Grand Slam tournaments. The German team of Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler who are ranked No. 2 in the world are also scheduled to take part in Phuket having recorded four podium finishes this year.

Another Brazilian team, sisters Marie Clara and Carol Salgado currently sitting at World No. 3 are back in the competition saddle after a year’s hiatus and have been in scintillating form, recently winning the Grand Slam in Moscow.

Ranked No. 4 in the world are the Spanish pair of Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernández who have been on the podium three times this year. A third Brazilian team are holding down the fifth spot in the world rankings, Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas will be looking to add to the three medals they have already won in 2013. The No. 6 team in the world rankings is another pair of sisters, Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger from Austria.

With the world’s top 6 teams anticipated at the Phuket Thailand Open the tournament promises to be the most exciting ever. Part of the new order of the FIVB Beach Volleyball event structure, this women’s only event will be held in Thailand for the eighth consecutive year. This single-gender Open tournament, the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Phuket Open will be held from October 29 to November 3.

The Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT will be played over six days of competition with the qualifying rounds played on Tuesday, October 29 followed by two days of pool play between the main draw on October 30 and 31. The final three days of the tournament will be played using a single elimination format, with the semi-finals being played on Saturday, November 2 and the finals on Sunday, November 3.

The semifinals on Saturday November 2 and the finals on Sunday November 3 will be broadcast on TV in Thailand and internationally to over 700,000,000 households worldwide.

Thailand has hosted over 10 women’s and one men’s FIVB tournament. Overall, the USA has been the most successful with 10 medal finishes in the seven FIVB World Tour events held in Phuket, followed by China with four medals. Brazil, Italy and Russia have each won two medals and Germany one during the past seven years.
