Lausanne, Switzerland, September 8, 2013 – Eight teams from seven countries have made it through to the semifinals of the 9th Pacific Mini-Games beach volleyball tournament in Wallis and Futuna, with Papua New Guinea the only country to have both a men’s and women’s team in the final four.

Samoa’s men upset Fiji 2-1 (21-15, 11-21, 18-16) on Sunday to knock out one of the early favourites on a day of tight matches, varied weather and a few upsets.

Top men’s seeds Tahiti and top women’s seeds Vanuatu both progressed with comfortable 2-0 wins.

The other countries to progress were Palau and the Solomon Islands in the women’s event, and Tonga’s men.

The teams had a rest day on Sunday before Monday’s semifinals.

Earlier, two days of pool play involving 12 men’s and eight women’s teams saw top men’s seeds Terau Ena and Steve Tauraa of Tahiti lead the way into the quarterfinals alongside New Caledonia, American Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and the Solomon Islands.

In the women’s draw, Vanuatu’s Joyce Joshua and Linline Matauatu were untouchable in Pool A as they moved into the quarterfinals against Silitone and Ioapo Eleni of Tuvalu. The other women’s teams in the quarterfinals were New Caledonia, Palau, Wallis and Futuna, Papua New Guinea, Guam and the Solomon Islands.
