Kampala facilities get FIVB thumbs up

The FIVB Kampala Beach Volleyball Open event is expected to draw in a TV viewership of 729 million people from around the world.

Kampala, Uganda, August 22, 2013 – Kampala is on track with its preparations to host the FIVB Kampala Beach Open scheduled to take place from September 25 to 29, following an inspection by the FIVB, which ended on Monday.

On the inspection visit, FIVB Inspector May Alaa from Egypt visited the facilities available to the athletes, referees and FIVB officials attending the event. She also held meetings with the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Kampala Capital City Authority, the Uganda Volleyball Federation, the local organising committee and toured the venue at the UMA auxiliary parking in Lugogo before concluding her two day visit.

Although Alaa was pleased with the accommodation standards and the location of competition venue, she did note that construction work at the venue needed to be sped up. “I am optimistic after the meeting with the promoter that works shall be finished in time” she said.

The double-gender FIVB Kampala Beach Volleyball Open Event is the first of its kind to be held in East Africa. It will take place on the grounds of the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) on a specialised court with high quality Red hill 28 sand.

The courts are currently under construction and will be ready in the coming weeks for the tournament that is expected to attract 24 countries from around the world.

Promoter Eddie Okila noted, “We are happy to have passed the first step that has been holding back most of our implementation plans. With the inspection concluded, we are now rolling out our final phase of implementation in readiness of the September 24 to 29 world event.”
