Portugal crowns its beach volleyball champions for 2013

The National Championship Final took place, for the fourth consecutive year, at the Albufeira do Azibo beach in Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Lisbon, Portugal, August 20, 2013 – After some intensive beach volley action, Portugal has crowned its beach volleyball champions for 2013. Januário Alvar/Fabrício Barros took the title in the men’s championship while Juliana Rosas/Ana Freches took the women’s.

Having had to settle for second place in 2011 and 2012, Alvar and Barros finally clinched the gold medal after beating Pedro Rosas/João Simões 2-0 (21-17, 32-30). Flávio Cruz and José Pedrosa took third place over Joaquim Carvalho and Luís Freitas with a score of 2-1.

Unfortunately, defending champions Roberto Reis and Fabrício Silva could do no better than fifth place this year, even though they were the favorites to clinch another championship.

In the women’s event, Joana Vasconcelos and Raquel Lacerda worked hard to defend last year’s title but were unable to stop Juliana Rosas’ and Ana Freches’ run to the gold which they took 2-0 (21-19, 22-20). Freches won the championship in 2006, 2011, 2010 and 2009 while Juliana took the top prize in 2008.

Also on the podium were Joana Resende and Tânia Oliveira who beat Daniela Loureiro and Rita Fernandes by 2-0 (21-11, 21-18) for third place.

It has been a good season for Juliana Rosas and Tânia Oliveira who also recently won the Universities Beach Volleyball European Championship at Porto.
